One of the complaints I had in Assassin’s Creed 2 was the same cookie cutter missions throughout the game that all the factions gave you. In Brotherhood, you have a bunch of new mission types that you are given, and none of them seemed to be given unless you had a reason to do them. There are also a bunch of war machines that Leonardo da Vinci built that you have to steal then destroy. You also have some flashback memories of events during the campaign of Assassin’s Creed 2. They also bring back the puzzle areas that are now known as the Lair of Romulus; they are still as solid as they were in the previous games. They also bring back the Subject 16 puzzles, flags, and feathers to collect.
The biggest thing that Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood adds is Ezio’s new Assassin’s Guild. After progressing through the campaign for a bit, you get to a mission where you have to help citizens of Rome in fighting against the Borgia. After saving them, they pledge their allegiance to the Assassin’s Guild. After these initial citizens are saved, to recruit more assassins, you have to take down the Borgia Towers and then save the citizens. Once you have the recruit assassins, you have two options with them. You either can send them out on missions through Europe to gain experience and money, or you can keep them in Rome and call them to assassinate people or help you out in fights. When you send them out on missions, it is just in a menu where you pick where they go, but it is very interesting the way they integrate real historical people into these missions, which makes them really interesting to just see where the story goes as the missions progress. Once I had unlocked the assassins, I found it really enjoyable to just call them in whenever, and by the end of the game when they were fully upgraded assassins, I just enjoyed sitting back and watching them destroy all the guards with ease.
The campaign, while it is very deep and interesting, is all well and good, but there is also the multiplayer side to consider. The premise behind the multiplayer is that Abstergo agents are being trained as Assassins to help them take down other multiplayer agents. There are three main multiplayer modes: Wanted, Alliance, and Manhunt. There are two types of modes in Wanted; there is a hardcore mode and a regular mode (the only difference between hardcore and regular is that in hardcore, the radar doesn’t show if the targets are above you or below you). Manhunt is a free-for-all mode where you are assigned a target, and depending on how good you are doing, you have anywhere from one to three people coming for you. In Alliance, there are three teams of two, where you are hunting the team that isn’t going after you, and the whole point is to score more points than the other team. The final mode is Manhunt, which is two teams of four going after each other. The multiplayer throughout all the modes is a very competitive scene. You constantly have to watch your back while observing the mix of A.I. and computer players trying to find your target. It’s a constant struggle between protecting yourself and going for your target that makes this game a blast to play. You get tons of perks and abilities ranging from disguises, to guns, to poison, all that add to your ability to be stealthy. When you get points in multiplayer, it depends on how you kill people, and the stealthier you kill them, the more points you get.
Overall, the single player component of Assassins Creed is deep enough to be a good enough purchase, but the addition of a solid multiplayer component makes it a great deal. The depth of the single player and all the new added content that makes it a minimum of a 20 hour play through (considering all the side missions, unlockable missions, and not to mention tons of things for collectors to pick up) is adequate for an offline gamer to warrant a purchase. The interesting and refreshing change of multiplayer that is different than the normal first person shooter we are mostly used to makes this a definent pickup.
