PAX East 2011: Hands on with Snapshot

snapshot, concept art,

How's that for some concept art?

Snapshot is a puzzle-platformer game with a robot protagonist; from that very general description it sounds fairly bland. However, it is far from it.  A major element of gameplay is the camera power, which allows you to take a snapshot of something and move it around to help you. For instance, say there is a box way out of reach but you need to get to a higher place. Just take a picture of the box and you can move it to help out with your predicament.

While that in itself seems fairly interesting, the real power of the camera is the fact objects that you take a snapshot of hold their momentum. So say you take a picture of a cannonball hurdling toward you, not only do you save yourself by capturing the cannonball, you also now have it stored away ready to be tossed in any direction you wish just by pasting the picture of it in any angle you wish. Even though the camera is your only power, by using it creatively you will be able to complete many different tasks.

Seeing how the game is still in development, there is little in the way of story. In fact, at this time the people I talked to did not have a set idea for a story, however there are elements in place. In the version I played there are stars to pick up and a goal pick up at the end of every level. Thought the demo version I played lacked things there were many things very well flushed out, such as a gorgeous art style and amazing music, probably the most relaxing music I heard the whole time I was at the convention.

Snapshot is slated for release this summer for PC and at least one console (thought the team has not figured out which).

Here are some screens that Retro Affect was kind enough to toss our way:
