Another part of the game that comes into play very often are the research points. There are three types of research points you can build up during the game: humanities, science and physical education. These points can be used to research new buildings, or to use on special classes to boost student’s scores in certain subjects, which helps increase your scores on the end of semester tests, which determine your school’s rank. Obviously, having a higher ranked school also increases it’s desirability, increasing your chances of getting transfer students.
All in all the game sounds very simple, however it actually gets fairly in depth. While the mechanics are very straightforward, when all of the factors get put together they require you do a good deal of planning to optimize your school. If you make an error in your floor plan, it can set you back a fair bit until you collect you call in your tuition or get bonuses from graduates. Much like Game Dev Story, you can get sucked into the gameplay and lose hours.
Beyond the great gameplay, there are also the charming graphics and great soundtrack that both play heavy on gamer’s nostalgia from the 8-bit era. All in all Pocket Academy is a fun game that is designed well and does exactly what it sets out to do, but it isn’t perfect. It does get repetitive after a while and the only way to change it up is to play a different map. There is also the fact that the game does not explain itself well; there is a good deal of learning from trial and error even though the game has a manual.
