Top 10 Unfinished Trilogies

5. Team Ico Trilogy

the last guardian, shadow of the colossus, ico

Missing Game: The Last Guardian

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are must-play PS2 titles, don’t let the poor sales numbers fool you. The critical success of the recent HD collection is a testament to that. The wonderful thing about the two games is their relatively small ties to one another: there’s still speculation about exactly how the games are related and where they fall chronologically. This idea continues in Team Ico’s upcoming title The Last Guardian. This third entry was hinted at as early as 2008, and potential release dates, conference appearances, and delays have filled the void since. While it’s currently slated for next year, whether or not it actually releases then has yet to be determined. Unlike most other entries on this list, we know it’s coming, but when…?

4. Star Wars: Battlefront

lucas arts, crytek, free radical

Missing Game: Star Wars: Battlefront III

Battlefront and Battlefront II scored and sold well, enough to merit a third title in the series. The upgrades from the original entry to the sequel were great, and fans could only speculate as to what was coming next. Concept art and gameplay ideas surfaced all across the web and magazines, and the hype began to build. Under development by Free Radical (now Crytek), the game was in good hands. A short time later, all the buzz around the game died, and rumor had it the the game had changed hands to Rebellion. Rebellion released a game all right, but it was only Elite Squadron, a middling handheld entry. Currently, all we have are more rumors and hopes that Battlefront III will one day pop up at a future E3. Only time will tell…

3. Kingdom Hearts

square enix, final fantasy, disney

Missing Game: Kingdom Hearts III

Next to Final Fantasy, Square Enix’s Disney crossover stands equally (some would say taller). It has just as much of a fanbase, as well as great review scores and sales. While Square’s focus has been on the FFXIII canon for the past few years, Kingdom Hearts hasn’t been neglected. On the contrary, the series suffers from Assassin’s Creed syndrome; we’ve seen three filler titles, with a fourth coming next year. I’m an admitted fanboy of the series, but even I am getting tired of these miniature versions of this epic saga. Oh, we’ve gotten a response from creator Tetsuya Nomura regarding III, but it’s not pretty. With all of Square’s focus on FFXIII-2 and Versus XIII (whenever that comes out…), he’s said that they haven’t even thought about the third game. I guess it’s time to start saving for a Playstation 4…

2. Chrono Trilogy

chrono cross, square enix, RPG

Missing Game: A Third Chrono Title

Square Enix makes the list twice with this one…what a surprise. Sure, they’ve got a myriad of projects going on now, but they must realize the potential here. Chrono Trigger was an atomic bomb of high review scores and green-grabbing sales. Square is fully aware of this, as they’ve put Virtual Console, PSN, DS, and future iOS and Android versions out there. While its sequel Chrono Cross‘s greatness is debatable, no one can deny the power of the franchise. Dragon Ball mastermind Akira Toriyama hasn’t done much as of late; he could at least make some concept art or something…

1. Half Life

valve, FPS, gordon freeman, episode 1, episode 2, lost coast

Missing Game: Half Life 3, or Episode 3 for that matter

What else could top this list but good old Valve? Now, they’re different from the other companies mentioned here in that most gamers are fine with Valve taking their sweet time. We know the future entry will be good, but we don’t know when it’ll surface. After all, it’s been four years since we’ve seen a Half Life release. Sure, we got Episode 2, 3, and Lost Coast in the meantime, but Valve hasn’t given us so much as a trailer in what seems life forever. There have been recent teases, but gamers are ready for the real deal. Let’s go to the Borealis already!
