One Point at a Time:
One of the smartest things someone ever told me over Xbox Live chat was that they were able to slowly increase the level of their control sensitivity from four to nine over the course of a few months. For those of you not familiar, the more sensitive your controls are, the faster you’re able to move your crosshairs. This is how those damn 15 year olds are putting their boot up your ass; Major League Gaming kids have maxed out their controller sensitivity, and that little bump in speed is all the difference between you getting the drop on them first. So, simply bump up your sensitivity one point and play on that sensitivity until you are comfortable. Then bump it up another point. Since hearing about this a few days ago, I’ve already gone from the default of two up to four, and I’m already seeing a difference in the speed I can acquire targets. Clever, clever.
Use those Skulls!
Skulls mark the place on the map in front of you where friendlies are getting zapped. If you see a pile of two or three skulls, you may want to turn around and go another way. You’re walking into an ambush with snipers in wait. Why put yourself through that? Go around and flank that ambush.
Slow the F Down
Sprinting should only be done in certain points. You should sprint to move from out of the open to your next piece of cover. You should sprint if you start taking damage. You should sprint through a pile of dog tags. You should NOT be sprinting around the map like an idiot looking for a fight. Crouch, keep that portable Heartbeat Sensor available, and take in your enviroment. Sure, you’re going to get stabbed in the back a lot, but you’re not going to do yourself any favors by sprinting blindly into a firefight as a noob. You don’t have the requisite skill set to out-twitch a fifteen year old and his lightning fast reflexes with him jumping all over the map, so set the conditions on how you fight these people and let them sprint into where you’re slowly moving.
Camping IS a Viable Option
For Death Match and Kill Confirmed, there are just some choke points on a map where you are guaranteed to rack up kills while idiots continue to run full tilt around the map. I’m not saying start picking out drapes in the building where you’re poking your assault rifle out the window. When you engage a few folks from that vantage point, make sure you have either set up a claymore into your little hidey hole to provide a little defense for yourself, or displace after a few shots to make sure the guy you whack one minute isn’t creeping up behind you the next. Keep moving…let’s not be a TOTAL noob.
Reload in Cover!
For chrissakes, what are you doing standing in an open door way reloading! Take cover, take a knee and reload. Make yourself as small a target as you can, and if you think or see someone coming towards you, drop a stun grenade and fall backwards to the nearest friendly.
Avoid Long Range Sight Lines:
You are a noob. You’re not going to be no-scoping anyone from across the map, so you need to minimize the amount you expose yourself along long straight open lengths of road or open areas. Always run inside buildings; not only do those buildings protect you from a variety of enemy strike package nonsense, but they generally cover you from direct line of sight of anyone in front of you. Also, because there are only a few ways into the building that you’re in, you know where enemies are going to be coming from, as opposed to big open areas where you can get whacked from 360 degrees at any point. You’re minimizing the enemies ability to see and engage you effectively by using the buildings for cover. Here is a terribly illustated picture of the point I’m trying to make:
Stay Out of the Center of the Map!
If you log in over at Call of Duty Elite’s website, you can see the “heat map” showing you were most of the match’s shooting happened. Guess what? Everyone runs to the center of the map like they’re kids playing magnetball. Do yourself a favor and stay on the periphery of the fighting, shooting into the killzones, as opposed to throwing yourself blindly into the middle of where everyone is getting whacked. Of course, this isn’t always possible for Domination or Capture the Flag, but for Death Match or Kill Confirmed, keep yourself safe as possible!
Find Yourself a Ranger Buddy:
Always let someone go in front of you. It’s that simple, you’re a noob, you’re backing them up. They run into an area and start shooting at someone, enemy dude shoots back, you come in and clean up the mess, while one or both of them are reloading and absorbing damage. This is particularly useful during Kill Confirmed matches, so you can run in and claim one or both dog tags, or if you get zapped, your buddy can grab your tag and kill the guy who got you. Obviously, you want to win the match, so the more points, the better.
Just Take the Kill in Front of You Already!
Oh, look, there’s a guy camping 50 meters away. I’m gonna sneak over to him and stab him in the back. Oh, wait, he jumped up, and he’s running away, but he still doesn’t see me. I’m going to chase him down and stab him in the back. A) Oh, shit, someone else shot him or B) someone shot me while I was screwing around.
Double XP Throwdown!
Yes, I’ll admit it. I’ve purchased Mountain Dew for their 15 minute Double experience codes. But that time goes fast and you’re never guaranteed a good healthy blast of experience if you have a bad match. How can you maximize this bonus? Simple. I used Domination maps and sprinted from one capture point to the next, scoring 300 XP a capture. Also, downing Cobra helicopters and Strafing Run helicopters takes you from 200 XP to 400 XP per kill, so make sure you have your Stinger on you. Proven: Challenges do NOT double when Double XP is live. Saved up 150 kills with a Striker and 60 kills with a Stinger for the same Double XP match and didn’t get double XP for either when they popped.
Set Up SAM Turrets in the Corners at Spawn Points
Not much more to say here. You drop a SAM where a lot of people go, it won’t be around for long. Keep it tucked away off to the sides with a clear line of sight to the skyline and you’ll take yourself down some zoomies.
Break the Need for Scoping!
When I first started, I couldn’t shoot at anything without using a red dot scope or an iron site. I didn’t trust firing from the hip, but I was getting the hell kicked out of me. Bringing the sites up usually meant the other guy would get the drop on me and kill me before I could properly aim. So by a complete fluke, I started playing around with other weapons and spent 20 proficiency levels working on the Striker shotgun with the Steady Aim Pro and Extreme Conditioning Perks on. I was running around like an idiot, especially for Domination maps where I would spend most of the match running from one contested flag to another, but I learned an invaluable lesson: to trust myself to hit a target firing from the hip! When I tried out the ACR 6.8 when I unlocked it at level 50, I found I no longer needed to use the scope to fire. I had forced myself to fire from the hip, and I liked it!
Domination For Experience, Kill Confirmed for Kill/Death Ratio
I didn’t really care about Kill/Death ratio until later in my “career” when I actually started registering more matches with positive K/D ratios then negative. But pound for pound, capturing Domination points with Extreme Conditioning and my Striker shotgun speeding along at full tilt racked me up some great experience points. I would have horrific kill/death ratios because I would run headlong into campers defending points, and it was not pretty. But I was regularly at least halfway up the leaderboard as far as score would go.
Two or More Tags, GET THEM:
Kill Confirmed, if you see two or more tags in a pile up, you sprint your ass into the middle and grab as many of them as you can before you get gunned down. You’re only worth one tag, but if you can claim two or more, then your suicide is worth it giving your team a positive gain from your death.
Tags as Sniper Bait:
In Kill Confirmed, it will happen regularly: you’ll be running with someone in front of you. They’ll round a corner and get mowed down. Instead of running to grab his tag, simply wait with your crosshairs trained on those tags for the grinning idiot who made the kill to lope around the corner and collect his prize. Then whack him and take his tags as well (see also: why its important to have a Ranger buddy).
Don’t Silhouette Yourself
Stay low to the ground and off roof tops. While having high ground is great for shooting guys below you, you also make a really great target as the only black speck against a bright white or blue background of the sky. Here’s what I’m talking about:

This is silhouetting. You can see the guy on the hill, but can you see the guy standing directly under him?
Get Aggresive When UAVs are in the Air:
You’re going to do most of your hunting when you’ve got a friendly UAV in the air showing you where everyone is at. Get your ass to the closest red dot on your mini map and prepare to give a beat down. You’ve got the advantage, use it. Between the UAV and Heartbeat Sensor, keep an eye on which direction the dots are going and try to get the drop on them. Of course, you’ll have folks with the Assassin perk on where they aren’t visible to UAVs, but thems the breaks.
It’s Going to Take Time:
There’s no substitute for just learning the maps, and that takes time. Like learning a song in Guitar Hero on Expert, you will come to find points on the map where you want to set up shop and other places you want to stay far away from. The exit of the drain pipe in Hardhat is a great place to drop a claymore. The escalator area in the Arkaden map is a damn slaughterhouse. These are all things that it just takes time of you getting mowed down repeatedly like sticking a fork in an electric socket. Over time, you’ll figure things out.
I am also writing this to see if anyone else out there has some better suggestions of ideas they’ve come up with while playing. Please leave them in the comments; I’m always up for new ideas for tricks I can toss in my kit bag.
