Bioshock Boobs Bum Out Irrational Games’ Ken Levine

In an interview with UK’s Official Xbox Magazine, Irrational Games chief Ken Levine opined at the fact that gamers seemed more interested in Bioshock Infinite’s female protagonist’s breasts than the fact she’s a saucy, strong female lead.

Shocking, I know.

Levine says (a whole lot), “In terms of her body type, I think certainly people on the Internet have spent way more time thinking about Elizabeth’s chest than I have. It’s something I’ve barely thought about.”

Levine continues: “We sort of evolved her over time, and that’s the challenge when you show stuff early on – you’re still in the creative process and you’re still evolving the creative process. I’m sure Elizabeth may evolve a little bit more over time because until it’s out, I haven’t made the definitive statement on it… so I certainly don’t spend as much time thinking about this issue as the Internet does, and I’m not sure what that says about the Internet but, you know.”

“It’s disappointing when [Elizabeth's chest] becomes a focus for conversation because that was never my intent and it’s sort of a disincentive – I’d much rather talk about what she’s going through as a person, but whatever, they have the right to shout out whatever they want.”

To me, the most important thing with Elizabeth was just honestly her eyes because, you know, they’re somewhat exaggerated and the reason for that is because there’s so much expression you can do there, with her eyes, and you see her often at a great distance.”

“I’ve spent way more time thinking about her eyes than her chest because eyes show a ton of expression, and you see her at a great distance. AI characters get very, very small, very, very quickly so you need to be able to recognize her silhouette, the shape of her body. Her colour scheme’s actually very simple, you know, the sort of two tone colour look – that’s all to do with this sort of exaggeration.”

First off, methinks the lady doth protest too much…or in this case, the video game developer.  Holy crap, really?  You’re going to launch into a ten minute missive as to the reasons why you have given her giant knockers?  For a more distinctive silhouette?  Stop it.  Just stop it.  She has a giant rack because she’s a lead character in a video game.  Of course she has giant tits.  You want to sell the game.  Just look at what the Namco Bandai folks for Soul Calibur 5 did for their marketing, for God’s sake!

Secondly, are you really surprised that gamers are focusing on Elizabeth’s breasts over her tantalizing backstory or her voluptuous motivation?  It’s not like we’ve been given a whole lot to go on here.  If you’ve seen some of the trailers, you barely get a smattering of conversation with her.  How in the hell are we going to dig her in any way other than from first glance…and especially when that first glance involves a pair of double Ds banging up in my face?  Besides, have you been to the internet?  Your primary demographic is 18-35 year old males.

Thirdly, you’re one of the most respected developers in the industry with a development team to match.  If it really bums you out that much, you’ve got the power to take those giant sweater puppies down a cup size.  But let’s face it, that’s not going to happen.  Hell, make ‘em even bigger for more sales; I demand you sweaty perverts out there buy another million copies on boob size alone.  Why stop at double Ds when you can get into kink porn sized triple Hs and have Booker using them for cover in Bioshock Infinite shootout sequences?

Ken’s candor in this matter has been wonderful. He didn’t try to hide the main reason she has big breasts as you have implied in this piece. He stated openly: “In terms of ‘does she need to be physically attractive?’ Booker’s not exactly an unattractive dude himself. He doesn’t have a spare tire, and he’s a good-looking guy,” he said. “Generally, people in media are more attractive than the average person. People like looking at attractive people.”

That said, to accuse him of obfuscating the issue isn’t fair. His comment about her needing to have a distinctive shape is entirely reasonable, not everyone has a huge 100inch lcd screen to play these games on. The fact that he is addressing this topic so thoughtfully speaks well of his character. You shouldn’t write such negative things about such a mindful storyteller.
