The fans have spoken: Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert will be united once more to fuse their genius into a gaming super baby, known only as Double Fine Adventure, a retro point-and-click adventure game, funded by you!
Mere hours ago, Double Fine announced a new project free from the constraints of publishers, and completely fan funded:
Publishers tell us that adventure games are dead. Our fans tell us they aren’t.
Who is right? Well, I think it’s about time we found out!
Into the THUNDERDOME!And by THUNDERDOME, I mean KICKSTARTER!
Regular Joes and Josephines, like you and I, can make a pledge over at kickstarter to fund the new title. The project has already exceeded its $400k goal, with additional funds being put back into the game and the making-of documentary, courtesy of 2 Player Productions, which aims to give the adoring public a chance to see what really goes down behind the scenes when making video games.
The basic $15 pledge will get you the fiished game on Steam, exclusive access to the PC Beta on Steam, access to the video series, and access the private discussion community. For anything above this, you can check out the rewards here. If you’re feelng particularly flush and want to donate the big bucks, the rewards are detailed on the Double Fine website.
This is truly a bloody brilliant idea and in the words of Tim Schafer
If the Double Fine Kickstarter Adventure is a success, it could open the doors for all sorts of new funding possibilities, and all kinds of new games that could never happen in the old system. So basically I’m just talking about changing the entire world forever for the better. And getting a game out of it.
At the time of writing, the project has over 10,000 backers and has raised over $450k! Tim, you go girl!
