No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Square Enix Tops It

Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, Square-Enix, Yoichi Wada, CEO,

Abandon all hope, ye who wish for this to actually happen!

Nowadays, “we can we expect a FF VII remake” is pretty a common demand among the gaming masses (bordering on irritating if you ask me), so when asked, Yoichi Wada replied, “We’ll make a Final Fantasy VII remake once we’ve made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of FFVII.”

My first reaction to that: “Damn!”
My second one: Sucks to a part of every Final Fantasy team since then!
Seriously, think about that. Here you are, you’re working for over five years on the next big game from a renowned developer, pouring your heart, soul and sweat into it, and years later, the CEO of said company simply says, “It’s not as good as a past title.”

That’s got to be a huge blow to one’s ego, but are Wada’s words really justified? Sure, most modern Final Fantasy games never seem to reach the same critical or fan praise of VII, but for Wada to say that over six games since ’97 haven’t reached the same level is a critical smack to the face.

Before we head into what the future holds for Square Enix, where they actually remake FFVII, let’s take a quick look at how the main numbered series (XI excluded, of course) has done over the years.

Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, Square-Enix, Yoichi Wada, CEO,

Large pic is large, be sure to click it for a better understanding!

Looking at the Metacritic and sale data of every Final Fantasy, from VII to XIII (spin offs and online games excluded), VII stands as the best-selling, but tied for second (with X and XII) critically in the series. Surely Wada and crew are aware that despite saying VII is the “peak of perfection” for the long-running series, basing a decision like this off sales alone doesn’t cut it!

To make matters worse (and possibly more confusing), Wada added, “If [Square Enix] were to release a VII remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with.” Now this is where interpretation plays a role. Is he saying that if they release a FFVII remake that they would never be able to top that, or what? That’s my personal take on what Wada said, but I’m open to hear more. Perhaps a more logical and overall nicer interpretation, please?

After the last few years, I’ve all but given up the hope for a VII remake ever happening, despite Square Enix essentially always leaving vague possibilities that it would happen. After hearing about this, though, I’m practically done wishing for one because I simply can’t stand a company treating its history and workforce with such disrespect. I may not be a fan of X and XIII, but I would never dishonor the creator’s hard work and effort in such a way.

Poor show, Wada, absolutely poor show!

I don’t even see why people want a remake so soon. The current generation of console tech is ancient. The next generation specs which have leaked aren’t that impressive — John Carmack spoke about it at E3.

A remake is supposed to be far and away an incredible leap from the original, so I wouldn’t mind waiting until even the next generation after this upcoming one.

i think that the reason that Wada said the if they redid FF7 now the series would be done is because a remake of a game that was that big would have exceptions crazy high both for graphics and gameplay (not even going into the argument of should anything be altered (made better) or fixed) and lets face it right now the only thing most people seem to care about is the art and graphics in a game and FF7 had so much more then that to offer, but for some sad reason people today dont want story as much as graphics (now im not saying all people but alot lets face it most people if they see good art they buy, not so good art and they pass it over never caring if it had a grate story) its sad but true thats why the market is the way it is today. no a remake of an older game right now just would not fit

Both FFIX and FFXII were better than FFVII. Way better.

Although FVII absolutely stands to receive the most benefit from a remake. The graphics were bad and janky (as were most early 3D graphics), and the translation was, in a word, shit. Modern graphics plus a decent translation would probably turn it into a game as good as our rose-tinted nostalgia pretends it was.
