It appears that Ubisoft isn’t messing around when it comes to bringing Assassin’s Creed to the big screen. After a lengthy shopping process for the franchise that would grant Ubisoft an unprecedented amount of control, Sony finally ended up in negotiations with the gaming studio to develop the title. However, it looks like it may end up handled solely by Ubisoft Motion Pictures. Better yet, the actor slated to play Desmond/Altair/Ezio will have a hand in producing the film as well through his company DMC Film Ltd. Who is it that is going to play our genetic memory assassin? None other than current Hollywood hot shot, Michael Fassbender.
Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, confirmed that “Michael Fassbender was our first choice” in an interview with Variety. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”
Truer words could not be spoken when you look at his range of films from X-Men: First Class, Band of Brothers, and Prometheus.
Any way you look at it, an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed marks a major development for the gaming studio turned large scale entertainment producer. Assassin’s Creed has a diehard following that could easily make or break the franchise with a feature film. Ubisoft has had a property turn sour after a flop on the silver screen. Even with the series creator, Jordan Mechner, penning the story for the film. Ubisoft looks to avoid this by securing outside financing to help the startup picture studio keep creative control on the film rather than having the film studio twist it to their desires. As this was the plan all along, it gives hope that finally we may have a good video game adaptation to film.
