Nine Inch Nails front man and Academy Award winner Trent Reznor.
Academy Award winning composer (god it feels odd saying that) Trent Reznor is working on the main theme for the next installment in the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. He is mostly known now for his work on the sound tracks for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network with Atticus Ross, but he gained fame as the writer and front man for the band Nine Inch Nails. What qualifies him to write music for a game you may ask? Well, this isn’t his first rodeo in that field either. He has worked with id Software and had music on both Doom 3 and the original Quake.
As a huge fan of the Call of Duty series, he jumped at the chance to work on the theme for the newest game. When Mike Snider of USA Today asked how his “aggressively sounding” guitar, bass and drums-based piece would fit into the game, he replied, “There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface. So it didn’t make sense to have a gung-ho patriotic-feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty.” If you have any doubts that Mr. Reznor can pull off this combo of emotions, then I suggest you listen to the Nine Inch Nails albums Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral.
