Sad news from the Square-Enix camp this morning as Final Fantasy Versus XIII is quietly cancelled and ultimately done for. For most, this might mean nothing to them. Either they’re over the Final Fantasy name, or sick of anything having to do with the “Final Fantasy XIII” universe. For me, Versus XIII was my most anticipated game of this generation!
Upon seeing the initial teaser way back in 2006, I was in love. Maybe it’s because I love the designer Tetsuya Nomura’s work, or because it looked like what the Kingdom Hearts series was to be from the get-go. I’ll definitely be pouring some potion in the curb for this fallen comrade!
This news comes as a surprise for me mainly due to Nomura’s numerous mentions that the game was still on track. As he put it “It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can,” he mentioned in an interview with Game Informer.
But what does this all mean for the already created assets for Versus XIII? Surely Sqaure-Enix and Nomura wouldn’t let six years of data and ideas go nowhere…Well, if you recall, a little over a month ago, there was a rumor circulating that Versus XIII would be renamed Final Fantasy XV, and all the game’s ideas/creations/story would be pushed as the new numbered title. Of course, nothing came of that rumor, and Square-Enix is still mum on their full reasoning as to why they’ve shelved Versus XIII. Perhaps their upcoming “Final Fantasy 25th anniversary” event in Shibuya in September might reveal their actions.
*sigh* Well, since my most anticipated title of this gen is now done for, I have nothing to look forward to, so this is where I bow out of the videogame industry and bid you all adieu! Unless, of course, Nomura-san now announces the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts III, please?!
Meanwhile, enjoy the last trailer created and released for Versus XIII and dream of what might have been.
