After months of speculation, Treyarch’s entry in the prolific Call of Duty series finally gets details on its bread and butter – the multiplayer. The most common complaint of Call of Duty’s multiplayer is that there isn’t much in terms of innovation or changes, but Black Ops 2 looks to prove the nay-sayers wrong. Let’s take a look at the trailer.
The first thing showcased seems to be a variant on the throwing knife that sends out an electrical charge that’s more damaging than a simple flash or stun grenade. Speaking of throwing knives, the tomahawk is back if anyone thought it’d skip this game. The red dot sight showcased seems to be able to see through smoke, and even thin walls, though it’s unclear if all of the red dot sights can inherently do this. Nonetheless, it’s way better than the heartbeat sensor we’ve been putting up with in the last three Call of Duty games.
Also, new kill streaks have been shown. There seems to be some sort of solar panel you deploy that slows down or stuns the enemy. Also, the RC helicopter showcased in the campaign trailers shows it’s teeth. It seems that when it’s shot down, it will crash into the nearest enemy for a kill. Now we’ve got heavy weapons- a mech is shown deployed and causing havoc, more so than Modern Warfare’s Juggernaut.
Try and pick up on the little things, too. I’m noticing that there are different artworks for peoples’ gamertags, just like in the original Black Ops. Expect more customizing this time around, I’m willing to bet. Also, colored dots are back, a nice aesthetic build that was also in the original Black Ops. The end of the trailer showcases some sort of tournament mode, as well.
Treyarch is pulling no punches this time around, that’s for sure. I’m liking the more science fiction-driven direction that Treyarch is going with over the pseudo-realism that’s permeated throughout most of the series. There’s still so much to this game that we’re unclear of. Zombies, the rest of the campaign, and this trailer is only the tip of Black Ops 2‘s multiplayer iceberg. Expect more details as the months roll by. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 releases on November 13 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
