Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance hit the US last week (you can check out our review for all the details). If you’ve beaten the game, then you’ve experienced the Dive mode-style credit sequence that ends the playthrough. Collecting all the glowing letters will spell out “secret message unlocked,” and this secret message can be viewed in the journal.
What does the message say? In short, some pretty fantastic stuff:
The past will be reawakened as a new number in never-before-seen detail.
Prepare yourself for the awakening of the next number.
Let’s address the top line first, as it’s pretty self-explanatory. The “past” here is clearly the previous games, and “never-before-seen-detail” is, well, just that. Nowadays, we call these returning games HD Collections, and it seems like the Kingdom Hearts series is getting one. Kingdom Hearts I, II, and re:Chain of Memories seem the likely titles included.
Now let’s take a look at the second line. The “next number” has to be three, because Kingdom Hearts I and II are the only number titles in the series (358/2 Days doesn’t count as the title is idiotic even if you do know what it means). Considering the most recent two games - Birth by Sleep and 3D – involve sleep and dreams respectively, it makes sense for Kingdom Hearts III to be the “awakening” from that sleep and those dreams. Plus, with the Final Fantasy Versus XIII cancellation rumors going around, that’s one less obstacle in the way of Tetsuya Nomura’s team returning to the series.
