While Sony can rightfully boast having a strong handheld device on the market hardware wise, the PS Vita has been coming up short lately on the software front. Though some solid titles litter the Vita’s lineup, lately it seems that Sony couldn’t be bothered to bring more enjoyable games to Vita owners. However, this may all change soon with Sony’s announcement of their “Cross Buy” promotion.
The promotion, in its simplest terms, is exactly how it sounds: people who buy certain games for the PS Vita or PS3 will get the same title for the other system free of charge. Shortly, if you buy a select title for the Vita, you will get the PS3 version for nothing, and the other way around. While Sony has played with this idea in the past with a few titles, this promotion promises to include several titles in its lineup. The first ones announced are PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Ratchet &a Clank Q-Force and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
As you could probably tell, “Cross Buy” for now seems to include strictly first party titles, but hopefully Sony will let popular third party titles join the party. EA has said that they are “taking it under consideration,” but haven’t anything solid set for the future. Myself, and several other gamers, I would venture to guess, hope that other third party companies see this as the great opportunity it is and jump on it.
Choice and variety are two things that many gamers appreciate and that is exactly what the “Cross Buy” promotion is. PS Vita owners and reluctant buyers have been waiting ever so patiently for more titles to grace the handheld, and the idea of cross interaction between the PS3 and Vita has always been something gamers had hoped they would focus on more completely. Maybe this is what people have been waiting on.
