Winner – Injustice: Gods Among Us
After whittling the list down to two choices, this award was still a tough one to decide. We debated for days on which game deserved the award more, but ultimately it came down to the game we kept getting drawn back to queue for and play four times: Injustice: Gods Among Us.
To some, Injustice may seem like a regular old fighting game, but when you get the opportunity to play it, you’ll realise it’s so much more. Since the title is developed by NetherRealm, you can feel a little bit of Mortal Kombat influence, but Injustice is definitely its own game with its own style. The characters look amazing, the animations are beautifully put together, and most importantly, the fighting is a smooth, fun experience with move sets tailored to each DC hero and villain. Pair that with the super moves each character has, plus the environmental modifiers, and you’re looking at countless variations of match-ups keeping each game fresh.
I’m not a big fighting game player, so I didn’t expect much of Injustice, but the demo pleasantly surprised me and quickly became my Gamescom favourite. What gives it the right to best of show is what all games should be about: offering players a brilliant and fun experience that they want to play constantly and can’t stop thinking about. I cannot wait till Injustice: Gods Among Us comes out, and I hope they put out a public demo before its release next year so you can experience what I’m expressing.
