Gamescom 2012 Awards: Biggest Disappointment

Gamescom 2012 awards

Loser – Far Cry 3

Before Gamescom, there were a handful of games that I had in mind that I needed to play because I couldn’t wait till release date. Most of them reaffirmed my anticipation, while others surprised me so much they jumped straight onto my most anticipated list. After E3, Far Cry 3 immediately caught my attention, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how great Vaas was as a villain, how amazing gameplay looked, and how open the world seemed. After Gamescom, Far Cry 3 dropped off that list and lost a lot of my interest.

Far Cry 3 is definitely not a bad game – it’s just kind of average. With the number of AAA titles coming out I won’t bother with it. I really expected a brilliant title with great and exciting gameplay elements, but I guess I expected too much. The multiplayer demo was nothing special but quite fun – not something people will be playing a long time from now. Then I played the single player demo and expected all the greatness to envelope me, but it never did. The demo had some varied gameplay to try and kept it fresh. Yet it controlled quite clumsily, and the mission was really linear, while gameplay was mediocre. The only up-side was that the game looked great.

Far-Cry-3-VaasMaybe it was just a bad segment choice for the demo, but Far Cry 3 really underperformed and disappointed me with its average gameplay and mediocre mission. I really hope that it’s just a poor gameplay segment, but I have a feeling that the demo is indicative of the full title. The villain may be brilliantly written and the story might be good, but if the gameplay isn’t fun, I won’t waste my time with this game when there are so many other better games releasing around the same time.
