Playstation All-Stars Wastes a Character Slot by Adding Evil Cole

infamous, playstation all-stars

SuperBot Entertainment has revealed the latest edition to the Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale roster with Evil Cole McGrath from Infamous. Battling opponents with electricity and sapping their AP, Evil Cole plays exactly as you’d expect – as an evil version of Infamous‘ shocking hero. Have a look at the reveal trailer.

Now we’ve written a lot about Playstation All-Stars, all of it being positive. Unfortunately, this character choice seems like a real faux pas (spot the subtle pun for a no-prize) for the developers. Sure, Evil Cole plays differently from his good counterpart, especially in his super attacks, but this still seems like misstep. At its core, this nothing more than an elaborate palette swap. You know what other game did that? Mortal Kombat…in the 90s.

No, there are three ways that SuperBot could have handled Evil Cole better. First, you could simply select Evil Cole by changing good Cole McGrath’s costume at the character select screen. Second, you could use a move to switch between evil and good Cole during the match, a la Zelda and Sheik in Super Smash Brothers. Finally, SuperBot could have programmed good Cole in such a way that he slowly becomes Evil Cole during the course of the match depending on his actions. While option three is certainly complex, any of these three would suit the game better, especially SuperBot is going to be wasting a character slot with red lightning instead of blue.

In any case, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale hits North American shelves on November 20. See you in the arena!
