PAX Prime 2012: Bust N Rush Hands-On

Imagine this scenario: you’re retired, relaxing in space – no worries. All of a sudden, your retirement is cut short, and your pink flamingo friend is crushed! Sounds like a bummer, eh? Well that’s the story of Bust N Rush, and revenge for your fallen comrade is on your mind as you barrel through tunnel after tunnel to get to those responsible. “But how will Kovo go about avenging his fallen flamingo comrade Paco?” I hear you asking. Simple, he will charge through three randomly generated worlds, each with their its quests and goals.

That’s all the back story you’ll get for Techtonic’s Bust N Rush, but if you’ve played any 3D runner before, you know story is not why you’re playing this genre. Similar titles like the iPhone’s Retro Revolution or PC’s Audiosurf offer little to no back story, but are still accessible to all that pick them up. Techtonic hopes to allow Bust N Rush players to earn multiple rewards while playing, and ultimately have fun while doing so!

As Kovo runs through each world, he’s often tasked with several quests that ask him to survive as “long as possible” or “destroy ‘x’ amount of ‘y’ colored ‘z’ items”. As Kovo does so, his score and multiplier increase until he’s either finished the world or has completed his mission.

The ever-changing, never-the-same-thing-twice world of Thurl offers up a variety of locales and difficulties during your journey. With caverns, labs, and deep space surrounding Kovo, he’ll need to make sure his wits and your reactions are fast enough to keep him constantly pushing forward.

My brief hands-on with Bust N Rush took me through the Quest and Survival modes, which offered precisely what their names claim.

Quest: In this particular mode, Kovo will occasionally pick up quests that ask him to do a variety of things, like the aforementioned smashing of certain colored blocks a designated amount of times. Strewn about every course are power-ups to give you brief boosts, and hazards to help make your journey a short one.

Survival: Pretty self-explanatory, eh? In Survival mode, you’re to make sure Kovo lasts until the timer hits zero and earn the highest score possible while doing so.

Bust N Rush offers one more mode: Bust-a-Friend, which is essentially Survival Mode, only you’re lasting as long as possible and ensuring your time is as high as possible. I mean, you want your friends to be challenged, yes?

Techtonic is offering free beta access via their site and will be launching Bust N Rush September 14 via Origin (care of EA), and it will launch on web browsers in the coming months. Techtonic has something really special on their hands here, and you can be sure Front Towards Gamer will be there to bring you all you need to experience it. Look for our review soon…
