NPD Numbers for August 2012

Article by FTG Contributor Robert Beach

Think August was another “stellar” showing of the gaming industry? Well no, a 20% drop ($515.6M) in retail sales from August 2011 isn’t a good sign for the forthcoming stats. Any who, let’s trot out these depressing numbers. Head first in the tubes at 11% ($252.8M) is the total software sales. Accessories follow with a meager 7% decrease ($127.3M), and tumbling to a massive free fall of 39% ($150.6M) is the hardware sales.

A collective disgusted groan is in order after that paragraph. With that news in mind, only 6 August titles broke the top ten. Darksiders II reigns on top of the NPD charts, despite selling 247,000 copies in North America at launch (8.14%). 3DS only titles New Super Mario Bros 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D:DDD follow THQ’s supreme sequel in retail software. The June release, Lego Batman 2, beat Fall of Cybertron and Sleeping Dogs. Finally, last month’s returning chart toppers of Black Ops, Spider-Man, and Arkham City end the downward spiral that is August game sales.
