There were many triple A titles on the floor of the Penny Arcade Expo this past weekend, but one of the biggest surprises was a smaller title. Hawken is a free-to-play mech combat game from Adhesive Games. The game has been teased with trailers and screenshots for a while now getting people excited. Well, it was first publicly playable at PAX and people clamored for it. For more PAX coverage check out Shanghai Six’s interview with Co-Founder of Adhesive Games, Chris Lalli.
Mech shooters tend to either be slow, drudging games where the mechs are essentially tanks with legs or they are the fast paced, anime style with the focus on close combat. Hawken manages to merge the two well. You get the speed of a shooter with the weight of a slower paced western mech game. This allows for a more fluid combat perfect for both deathmatch and objective gameplay modes. The customization is quite deep and allows you to trick out your Mech from weapons to speed boosts to support abilities, not just the camo on your mech.
