Firmware Update v4.30 for PS3 Adds Vita Trophies & Axes Life with PlayStation

Vita Trophies are now viewable in the new PS3 firmware update.

Sony announced via the official PlayStation Blog that they would be releasing system firmware update v4.30 for the PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, October 23rd.

The new firmware affects the way one views Trophies. First, Trophies will be moved from the Game section of the Xross Media Bar and moved under the PlayStation Network tab. More importantly, however, is that PS Vita Trophies will finally be viewable on the console, no longer requiring having the portable handy.

But just as Sony giveth, Sony also taketh away. The firmware will also remove the Life with PlayStation app from your PS3 for good. While no one made use of its cumbersome delivery of news and weather updates, the app also housed the ability for PS3s to participate in Stanford University’s Folding@home project. The PlayStation Blog post claims that over 15 million PS3s have contributed 100 million hours of computing to Folding@home in its five years. The project is designed to understand protein folding and its role in diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and some types of cancer.

Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, offered the following quote:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”
