Killer Instinct is Free-to-Play in the Worst Possible Way E3 2013

Killer Instinct Killer Instinct returns in the form of a day-one, digital download, available straight off the bat for Xbox One owners and completely free. Well, the fisticuffs of Jago are free for the entirety of game, while other characters, new and old, require some coin.

From an IGN preview, Mitch Dyer pens this head-scratching news about the Killer Instinct.

Killer Instinct is a day-one digital-only release on Xbox One, and features — get this — one character. Jago is free to play on launch day. Everyone else — unspecified returning characters as well as original fighters — will cost money. Price is to-be-determined (of course).

Woo! Another Rare title heading in the wrong/bland direction. Microsoft won’t take the typical (and safe) route with a free-to-play game. No, instead of shelling out for wacky/neat skins, we’re treated to only buying other characters in a fighting game (where dabbling into every character is necessary). However, one, slightly optimistic point of view is this could be treated as a glorified demo, limiting our play to one while handing everything else to us. Still, early and light on the details, but where it stands, this restriction only hinders the success.
