Wolfenstein: The New Order Shakes Off Multiplayer Out of Artistic Vision

Wolfenstein: The New Order peeked interests at E3 this year with various impressions on its alternative history and return-to-form, one-liner machine. However, what sparked intrigue was the lack of mindless gunplay set within a boxed map.

Pete Hines, vice president of PR and marketing at Bethesda declared Multiplayer for Wolfenstein: The New Order a bit out of the ordinary for Machine Games’ overarching narrative. “We talked to Machine Games about the game they wanted to make and multiplayer wasn’t in their thought-process” Hines said.

Hines also countered the notion of dragging out player vs player modes because the feature presented itself in previous Wolfenstein games.

“We’re not going to force it down their (gamers) throats and say, ‘”well, the last games did, so you have to do it.”‘ These guys do cool stuff. If you look at The Chronicles of Riddick or you look at The Darkness, those games have a creative element to them that is similar to the things they’re doing in Wolfenstein and that’s what attracted us to them, and that’s what attracted us to their vision of Wolfenstein. And we said ‘”okay, run with that.”‘ We’re not going to say, “Oh, we’ll find somebody else to do the multiplayer.”‘ Wolfenstein: New Order is as you describe it. End of discussion.”

As per with most “AAA” companies, Bethesda remains as one of the few publishers not shoving Multiplayer down our consuming holes for the hope of stifling used games. Get back into BJ this fall on current and next-gen consoles as well as PC.
