Saints Row IV: Enter the Dominatrix Review (360)

SaintsRowIVEnterTheDominatrix

The tale of Enter the Dominatrix is twisted and confusing – almost as crazy as Saints Row IVOriginally penned as a gigantic expansion for Saints Row The Third, Volition had the unfortunate loss of THQ to deal with. Fortunately, Deep Silver stepped up to the plate, and didn’t look to scrap any ideas Volition had in mind. Enter Enter the Dominatrix. In an alternate reality where aliens again invade the world of the Third Street Saints, the first Saints Row IV expansion isn’t raising the bar in terms of narrative or plot. However, this expansion does offer the same level of insanity and humor that Saints Row IV brought back in August.

In terms of material, Enter the Dominatrix doesn’t really offer a lot of new mechanics. It offers the same kinds of stunts, stints, and antics that we loved Saints Row IV for, with even more characters from previous games sprinkled throughout. The story actually takes place in the bad ending of the previous game, where Steelport essentially was annexed from the United States. Instead of being snatched up by a mad, humorously British-sounding Zin monarch, the Saints get thrown into a virtual reality run by a rogue A.I. known as the Dominatrix. If nothing else, the expansion seems like an interesting look at what could have been.

For better or worse, powers mostly remain unaltered from Saints Row IV. The game made you feel almost too powerful by the halfway point, and Enter the Dominatrix inflates that feeling of power to absurd levels. Honestly, I think stripping the player of his or her powers like they did in Saints Row IV would have been a little more satisfying, as the endless amounts of carnage you’ll be throwing out feel a little less earned.

Saints Row IV

Speaking of not being earned, you’ll be hearing a lot of Matrix parodies thrown your way, as the title implies. They’re funny if you get them, but I’m willing to bet a portion of Saints Row IV‘s audience haven’t seen an almost fifteen-year old science fiction movie, no matter how popular it was in the 90s. Just like the original Saints Row IV, it’s full of parody and references that will make Saints Row veterans crack quite a few smiles.

It can’t be understated that the “expansion” is actually fairly brief in content. The five missions can be completed within a couple hours if you’re looking to burn through them. However, for the price of $6.99, you’ll feel like you got your money’s worth. The amount of chuckles and twisted gameplay is well worth the price of entry. It’s purposely short, and presented in a sort of “behind the scenes” kind of story. You’ll even have color commentary by the cast, which again, leads to some funny moments.

The general goofiness and levity are a good addition to an already funny game. While brief, the experience is definitely worth it if you’re looking for some laughs. Hopefully, the Saints Row IV season will continue the laughs with How the Saints Saved Christmas. In the meantime, Enter the Dominatrix is well worth the price of admission.
